Sometimes I'm the host and sometimes I'm the participant. I enjoy seeing how a show comes together and all the elements and people that make up a good program. Lights, camera and action. Whether it's a movie set or a live conference or event there is one common thread that makes it an experience.
What is it?
Well, it's the people.
Last month I went to a themed Mastermind event. I was invited by a friend of the host. I wasn't sure who I would or wouldn't know. My friend was new to the group and wasn't sure he would really know anyone either. As we walked through the door a friendly voice said hello and I immediately recognized him and as we connected all we could do was laugh and giggle and enjoy our excitement of seeing each other in person. He lived half way around the world and most of our interactions from the last year had happened over Skype and email. It was a delight to catch up and hang out and of course, so quickly find a connection.
It was awesome. A big estate on overlooking the ocean complete with a putting green, rec room and wrap around balcony. You walked in and the disco music was blaring, the disco ball was shining and 80% of the crowd remembered to "dress accordingly." But the really fun part was finding out what made all these entrepreneurs so successful. One spent his life building his strength, he had done amazing things like tearing phone books in half with his bare hands and pulling large machinery with just his hair. He owned an online Chinese herbal dispensary and it created an easy 6 figure income for him annually.
And then there were the twins. Two young asian guys who invented a posture gadget that helped you sit up better in your office chair. They were not only talented inventors but they were also great at writing and marketing and had turned their little idea into a business. Finally, there were more familiar faces that I had known or done past business with and it was fantastic enjoying those reconnections and hugs and laughs.
At the end of the day, I may forget the lovely estate overlooking the water. I may forget the disco ball and the platform shoes. But I won't forget how lovely it was to connect and reconnect with like minded people. It made me realize the real secret sauce to an event is never actually in the "place" but rather, with the "people."
This year, as you up your game and find those Mastermind groups where you are best suited I hope for you the BEST people and the BEST connections. Aim to be just that....someone you would want to connect with at your next event. Like attracts like, so be attractive!
